One person was killed and three others seriously injured today on the Spanish island of La Gomera, in the Atlantic archipelago of the Canary Islands, when a tourist bus overturned, authorities and rescue services said.
“A bus fell into a ravine,” the rescue services said in a post on the X platform, specifying that “one man is dead, three are seriously injured and eleven bear minor injuries.”
According to reports, the vehicle went off the road and crashed into a hillside. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined. Photos released by the rescue services show the bus overturned, falling sideways on the mountainside parallel to the road.
Several emergency services teams have rushed to the scene, including paramedics, firefighters, a gendarmerie unit, the regional newspaper “Canarias7” writes.
A helicopter is taking part in the rescue operation to collect and transport the wounded.
The nationality of the victims has not been made public, but Hector Cabrera, head of the emergency service in La Gomera, explained to public television network TVE that those on board the bus were “staying in a hotel complex” on the island.
With sunny weather all year round, the Canary Islands are a very popular tourist destination.
In 2025, the Canary Islands welcomed 15.7 million visitors out of the approximately 100 million tourists that all of Spain had, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
