Iran has suspended direct diplomatic contacts with the US after US President Donald Trump threatened that “an entire civilization will die tonight,” although talks through mediators are continuing to reach a ceasefire agreement, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing officials in the Middle East.
The development complicates efforts to reach an agreement by the deadline set by Trump, but has not ended the talks, the sources said.
The Iranian daily Tehran Times stresses that diplomatic and indirect channels of communication with the US have not been closed.
The deadline given by Trump to the Iranian regime expires at 8 p.m. Tuesday night (East Coast time in the US, 3 a.m. Wednesday in Greece). In a press conference at the White House yesterday (Monday), the US president threatened to destroy “every power plant” and “every bridge” in Iran within four hours of the deadline if Tehran does not accept Washington’s conditions for ending the conflict.
