Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is in a coma, being treated for a “serious” medical problem in the Iranian city of Qom and unable to rule the country, according to an intelligence assessment cited by The Times.

“Mojtaba Khamenei is being treated in Qom in serious condition, unable to participate in any decision making by the regime,” says a diplomatic memo based on US-Israeli intelligence shared with their Gulf allies.

It is the first time a publication has publicly revealed Khamenei’s location since the beginning of the war. He is believed to have been wounded in the early attacks on February 28.

The document also reveals preparations for the burial of his father and former supreme leader Ali Khamenei in Qom after his death in the first attacks.

The publication seems to explain why since the day he was “appointed” his father’s successor, he has never appeared in public and his messages are read by anchors. He is being treated in the holy city of Qom, not Tehran, presumably to be close to the country’s religious center and away from the constant blows to the capital.

However, Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly officially warned that Iran’s forces will not be deterred from assassinating commanders.
