Authorities in Iran today executed by hanging two men found guilty of acting on behalf of Israel and the United States during the wave of anti-government protests that rocked the country earlier this year, the judiciary said.
“Mohammad-Amin Biglari and Shaheen Wahidparast (…) were hanged after the Supreme Court reviewed their case and finally confirmed their sentences,” Mizan reported, adding that the two men were involved in the anti-government protests that peaked in January.
The Supreme Court upheld the sentence of the two men who were accused of being “among the rioters who sought to commit mass murders” by stealing weapons and military equipment by storming a military facility, Mizan noted.
Amnesty International said the two men belong to a group of four people who have been given the death penalty in the same case. Last week Iranian authorities executed 18-year-old Amirhossein Khatami, who was convicted in the case.
Amnesty International said in a recent report that 11 men were at risk of imminent execution for their involvement in anti-government protests. The non-governmental organisation complained that those arrested were “subjected to torture and other ill-treatment while in custody” before being convicted during “grossly unfair trials based on their coerced confessions”.
