The Revolutionary Guards have threatened to target US universities in the Middle East, citing the destruction of two Iranian universities in US and Israeli aerial bombings.
“If the US government wants its universities in the region not to suffer retaliation (…) it must condemn the bombing of the universities in an official statement by noon on Monday 30March,” the Revolutionary Guards said in a statement quoted by Iranian media.
The Revolutionary Guards, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, recommended that “workers, faculty and students at American universities in the region should move a mile away” from the campuses because the latter could be targeted.
Several US universities have campuses in Gulf states, for example Texas A&M, in Qatar, or NYU (New York University), in the United Arab Emirates.
The Friday night bombing in Tehran particularly hit the University of Science and Technology in the northeastern part of the Iranian capital, resulting in extensive damage to its facilities, but no casualties were reported, according to Iranian media.
