Chancellor Friedrich Murch has called for an “explosion” of violence – analogue and digital – much of it caused by migrants, prompting a reaction in the Bundestag.

During a debate on digital violence against women, following the revelation of a well-known actress’ allegation of “digital rape” against her ex-husband, the Chancellor said that immigrant groups were partly to blame for the “explosion” of cases of analogue and digital violence in the country.

“I don’t want to downplay the issue,” Chancellor Merz said, responding to criticism, mainly from the Greens, that he was not addressing the topic of the debate: “It is not only women in this country who are discussing and talking about this issue, but also many men – and I am one of them.” Referring to his government’s legislative initiatives in this regard, he even mentioned the drafting of a law on electronic “bracelet” surveillance and the storage of IP addresses to facilitate the prosecution of crimes in the digital space.
