Two separate search and rescue operations were carried out by the competent authorities in the sea area south of Crete, under the coordination of the Integrated Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (ESRC).

According to the Coast Guard – Greek Coast Guard, in the first case a dinghy with 41 foreigners on board was detected in a sea area 44 nautical miles southeast of Kales Limenoi, following a detection by a Frontex air force aircraft. The foreigners were rescued by a Coast Guard rescue boat and are being safely transported to the port of Ierapetra.

A little while earlier, another boat with 42 foreigners was spotted 48 nautical miles southeast of Kales Limeni, also by Frontex airborne assets. They were rescued by a Belize-flagged coaster, while the rescued people are being taken to the port of Kales Port.
