A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.5, according to a revised assessment, struck northern Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said while issuing a tsunami warning whose waves could reach 3 meters.
The earthquake struck at 4.53pm local time in the Pacific Ocean, off Iwate province.
The tremor was so strong that it shook tall buildings as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of kilometres away.
